Which Memory Card is Recommended for a VIOFO Dashcam?

Micro-SD cards play a crucial role in dash cams, but not all cards are suitable for use in dash cams. The footage recorded by dash cams is stored on a micro-SD card, which is an essential component of the dash cam setup. Here are some parameters to consider when selecting a card for your dash cam.

Capacity

The capacity of the micro-SD card is a crucial factor when selecting a card for your dash cam.

The dash cam footage is stored on the micro-SD card, so you need to ensure that the card has enough capacity to store all the recorded footage. A 64GB micro-SD card is the recommended minimum size for a dash cam. This capacity should be sufficient to store several hours of footage. However, if you intend to use your dash cam for long trips or commercial purposes, you should choose a card with a higher capacity of 128GB or 256GB, supported by most VIOFO cameras. Some of our cameras even support 512GB cards.

Write Speed

The write speed of the micro-SD card is another important factor to consider.

The write speed determines how quickly the dash cam can save the footage to the card. A high write speed ensures that the recordings are saved quickly and efficiently, without any delays or buffering. It is recommended to choose a micro-SD card with a write speed of at least Class 10 or U1. However, if your dash cam records in 4K resolution, you should choose a card with a write speed of U3.

Endurance

Endurance is a crucial factor when selecting a micro-SD card for your dash cam. Dash cams continuously record footage, which means that the micro-SD card is subjected to constant read and write cycles. A card with low endurance will wear out quickly and may lead to data loss or corruption. It is recommended to choose a micro-SD card specifically designed for dash cams. These cards have a higher lifespan and can withstand constant read and write cycles. They are also designed to withstand the extreme temperatures and vibrations in a car.

Compatibility

Before purchasing a micro-SD card for your dash cam, be sure to check if it is compatible with your dash cam model. Not all micro-SD cards are compatible with all dash cam models, and using an incompatible card may lead to data loss or corruption.

Brand, Warranty, and Price

When choosing a brand for your micro-SD card, it is important to choose a reputable and reliable brand. Such brands typically manufacture high-quality micro-SD cards that are reliable and efficient. A warranty ensures that you will receive a replacement or repair if the card does not work or does not perform as expected. A warranty gives you the assurance that your card is covered in case of any issues. VIOFO offers a minimum of 12 months warranty for its cards.

The price of the micro-SD card is also an important factor. While it may be tempting to opt for a cheaper option, it is better to invest in a high-quality card that will serve you well for a long time. And cards manufactured by a reputable company or dash cam company like VIOFO are relatively reliable.

In conclusion, you can refer to the above tips and choose a card for your camera.

We have also conducted numerous tests and collected extensive feedback. We only recommend VIOFO original cards, Sandisk MAX or EXTREME cards with long lifespan (see image below), most other cards are not recommended, such as the Samsung EVO card.
